Runaway Cyber Bride
One day, she was listening to her
computer programming teacher in Toronto encouraging her
class to "have fun and make friends" through
cyber chats, and the next, she was hooked for life. "It just happened ," is all the 15 day old bride can say about her strong online attraction for starnger tony Paul in Pune (India). Just 15 days after the first hesistant chat, the e-mails culminated into four passionate hours every day in the world of MIRC."Sukhwinder used to bunk classes to rush and check for my messeges", says Tony, then a partner in a local cybercafe. He would rush to post a messege every time a customer vacated a computer. With time to kill during slack hours, the
small-time canteen proprieteor's fling with
online"time -pass" culminated into confessions
of business affairs personal problems or even cricket. "Sukhwinder understood me so well, I left all my friends to seek advice and support from her., advice that saw me through tremandous difficulties," says Tony, This with MIRC friends in Mumbai, USA, South Africa and Holand keenly encouraging every step of the Romance. "And after six months, we were dying to meet," says Sukhwinder. Having kept the passion as a "complete secret from her traditional Punjabi family" in Canada, she now abandoned family, worked longer hours packaging cosmetics in a Toronto factory to buy her ticket, and finally fled, with a single call from Toronto airport bidding Canada, staunch parents and two younger brothers goodbye. Another call from London airport to "mummy" (Tony's mom Nancy), announcing her arrival to the knot, and the stage was set for a simple court wedding, on June 6,2000. The hitch: Sukhwinder's father, descending
on the couple with her four Ludhiana cops and a serach
warrant issued by the sub-divisional magistrate in
Khanna, Ludhiana, played spoilsport. Midnight, June 22,
2000, the hapless bride was bundled off by the Ludhiana
police and spent the night sulking in magisterial
custody. The battle finally ended in Khanna, Punjab, after Sukhwinder deposed before court that she had married Tony of her own will and wanted to spend the rest of life with him. With the bride he proposed to online, June 5 last year, finally safely home, the happy twosome insist their "little"love story poses no regrets. RESHMA PATIL (INDIAN EXPRESS, JULY 9, 2000) |
