In 1482, Leonardo started working for the
Duke of Milan and earned a reputation as great painter.
Leonardo spent 17 years in Milan, until the Duke's fall
from power in 1499. He was listed in the register of the
royal household as pictor et ingeniarius ducalis (painter
and engineer of the duke).
His most famous work, the Mona Lisa, was completed around
1504. It is one of the most famous portraits in the
world, well known for the mysterious smile and the
knowing eyes of the lady that seem to follow you. Not
much is known about who Mona Lisa really was and some
even believe that the painting is of Leonardo himself
drawn to look like a woman!
